Giovannino (Johnny) Tumminia was the son of Salvatore Tumminia and Caterina Di Blasi. His parents were both Roman Catholics and were born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy—his father was born in 1889 while his mother was born in 1890. He had two sisters, Angelina (Dolly) Tumminia and Madeline Tumminia-Parysek, and four brothers: Antonio (Blackie) Tumminia, Joseph Tumminia, Sam (Salvatore) Tumminia, and James Tumminia. His family moved often. Angelina was born in 1931 in Hoboken, Little Ferry, New Jersey; Madeline was born in 1913 in Florida; Antonio was born in 1918 in Toms River, New Jersey; Joseph was born in 1922 in Williston Florida; and James was born in 1925 in New Jersey. Giovannino was born on 24 October 1928 in Cranford, New Jersey.
His mother and father moved from Italy before his birth, but their specific immigration dates are not known. Growing up, he moved frequently, and moved to Linden, New Jersey, in 1930. He later moved back to Cranford, New Jersey, in 1935. He would continue to live in Cranford until at least 1940, as census records show, but later moved Pascagoula, Mississippi for unknown reasons. His mother died in 1940 and his father died in 1965, both in New Jersey. It is possible that Tumminia moved away from New Jersey shortly after the death of his mother. Later, he would marry his wife Eleanor Tumminia and have four daughters and a son: Eleanor S. Tumminia, Jo Marie Tumminia, Annette D. Tumminia, Sherry Tumminia Ray, and Johnny Tumminia Jr. There is speculation that his fourth daughter, Sherry Tumminia Ray, was not the daughter of his wife, Eleanor Tumminia, as she does not appear in records until the Report of Casualty in 1968 and shares a different last name, Ray.
