Tumminia served one tour during the Vietnam War, it lasted from 1955 to 1966. His duties would have been similar to those in the Korean War---essentially helping to deactivate mines and dismantle traps, act as an infantry soldier when the occasion demanded, or guarding those deactivating mines and traps as an infantry man. Although it is not known specifically what his position was in the Korean War, it is known that he was a Specialist 5th Class in the Vietnam War and that he was specifically a light weight weapons infantryman. This would imply that he was promoted to this position sometime in the Korean War or shortly before that in the five year gap between his enlistment and deployment. It is also known that the 65th Engineering Battalion served in twelve Vietnam campaigns. The first companies arrived in Vietnam close to December of 1965, while companies A, B, and E arrived near the Cu Chi area around January of 1966. Tumminia served the final stretch of his tour from 26 February 1966 to 30 March 1966, which implies that he joined his unit shortly after they arrived in Vietnam. Company B, the specific unit within the battalion to which Tumminia was assigned, received two Valorous Unit awards.
