Giovannino Tumminia was killed on 30 March 2018. He was conducting normal duties, whether guarding or dismantling is not known, when an explosive detonated near him. It is not known specifically which type of explosive it was—it was not a mine, nor a specific trap. Although it is speculated that it was a grenade or other such explosive. His body was recovered and processed on the same day. He died in South Vietnam at the age of 37 and was buried in Baltimore on 12 April 1966.
He would later receive the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
